Safety First

Please do not rely on this walking guide to solely navigate the hike. Always take a paper map and compass with you and make sure you know how to use them. Directions

1. From Calton Lees Car Park, head down to the B6012 road and cross the One Arch Bridge over the River Derwent.
2. After crossing over the One Arch Bridge, take the iron gate immediately on the right, heading through the fields to the village of Beeley.
3. From Beeley and head east out of the village along School Lane. The stream, Beeley Brook, should be on your right as you leave the village.
4. After about 500 meters, as the road bends right, leave the road and continue straight along the path heading towards the wood. The path eventually ascends with the wood to the immediate right. Pass two gates until reaching the third and final gate. Cross the wooden stile adjacent to the gate and head into the wood.
5. Continue through the wood, sticking to the path which follows the flow of the stream; Beeley Brook.  The path continues upwards and eventually meets a more defined track at a crossroads.  At the crossroads turn left and continue for about 300 meters before reaching a gate that takes you out of the wood and onto a wide lane; Beeley Lane. Cross the lane, climb over the stepped stone stile and continue along the wide moorland track for about 1 mile.
6. At the end of the moorland track, climb over the stone wall stile and head once again into woodland.
7. Cross the tiny stream, then take the first fork left, to follow a small path on the edge of the wood. Follow the track until you join a small road. Turn left, crossing diagonally to take the higher track up through the wood.
8. Continue through the wood for approximately 700 meters before reaching three defined stones to the right of the track. Turn left to meet the top of the Chatsworth waterfall where the path turns both left and right. Take the right-hand path which descends with the waterfall to the left. The path curves to the right and continues through the trees. Follow the path through the interesting woodland, passing an Oak tree which has spectacularly fallen.
9. Eventually, you meet the impressive Chatsworth Hunting Tower with views that open out across the Chatsworth Estate. Head left past the three steel canons and down the steps.
10. Cross the road to continue descending down the path, which veers to the left through more woodland. The small sets of steps take you to a long series of narrow steps which spiral down to the right.
11. Cross the stream and continue to meet the road. Cross the road and continue along the path until you reach a second road. Turn right towards the Chatsworth Farmyard. The road bends left and leads to a gate through towards Chatsworth House.
12. Head through Chatsworth House car park. Drinks, refreshments and toilets are all on offer, or visit the house and wonderful gardens if you have time.
13. Continue down the track away from Chatsworth House and over a stone bridge. Immediately after the bridge, turn left and head across the fields which lay in front of the house, alongside the River Derwent.
14. Continue alongside the river for approximately 1 mile, taking the upper path back to the start point of Calton Lees Car Park.
